Chapter 5

Self-as-Context—You Are When You Are

All bad qualities centre round the ego. When the ego is gone, Realisation results by itself. There are neither good nor bad qualities in the Self. The Self is free from all qualities. Qualities pertain to the mind only.

Get Centered with Self-as-Context

ACT asks us to be flexibly present and centered on our moment-to-moment experiences regardless of what those experiences may be. To do this, you must be free of interference from the mind, from your history, and from the stories you tell yourself. Much like defusion is the process of noticing our thoughts and allowing them to happen, self-as-context asks us to notice the events of our lives and let them be as they are, separate from our conceptions of what any of it means related to our past and the content of our lives.

With self-as-context, you create a place from which you can willingly and flexibly observe your life rather than run from discomfort, difficult feelings, or problematic situations.
